BACKGROUND TO RESOURCE

This resource is based upon the experiences of over 30 prisoners,
all serving (or have served) lengthy prison services totaling 283 years.

It was developed as a result of:

Consultation with offenders who have participated in numerous ‘preventative’ programmes.

Professionals responsible for direct delivery of preventative programmes and also school based education programmes.

Many within both groups were not satisfied with the quality of resources they were expected to engage and participate in OR deliver. What both groups agreed independently was that the exercises needed to be:

Engaging • Relevant • Hard hitting • Believable • Simple to use

Both groups felt that extended lengthy programmes to address specific offending issues were not necessary and were potentially counter-productive. In addition many education professionals commented that there was a lack of hardhitting and engaging material around offending and young people putting themselves at risk.

The Prisoners preventing Offending resource is designed to:

Complement and add value to existing offender management programmes

Create a ‘user friendly’ educational resource for young people in alternative educational provision (Pupil Referral Units) & for PSHE within Schools and Colleges

Add a sense of validity to existing programmes

Maximise youth participation on preventative programmes

Reduce re-offending

USING THE PACK

Session Structure: The resource comprises of 6 sessions. Each hour long session comprises of 3 exercises followed by a supporting film. The resource is adaptable for both group or individual work.

Exercises: The exercises are supported and reinforced by quotes and scenario's based on offenders experiences involved in the development process of the pack. These scenarios have been provided as anecdotal evidence and contain no information that enables them to be identifiable to any specific offence.

Easy to Use: The pack is colour coded to emphasise the following:

Yellow = Exercise

Green = Exercise aims & Objectives

Red = Direct questions / tasks for participants

Blue = Discussion points & Quotes

DVD’s: The pack contains 3 DVD’s, each containing 2 short films. These are entirely based upon the experiences and reflections of ‘real’ prisoners and ex offenders to reinforce and add validity to the exercises.
